Dog Fences: Keep Your Dog From Barking at the Neighbors

Use dog fences to keep your dog from barking at the neighbors!

Fence etiquette is a big part of being a good neighbor. But another part of being a good neighbor is making sure your dog behaves, too. So, use dog fences to keep your dog from barking at the neighbors. In this blog, we’ll look at some ways you can cleverly use a fence to keep your dog calm. Even if they’re used to seeing the neighbors and know who they are, chances are, they’ll bark anyway. Dogs have a tremendous protective instinct, and anyone who isn’t part of their pack could present a potential threat.

Privacy Fences Make for Good Dog Fences

For good dog fences, consider putting up a privacy fence. Your dog might be experiencing what is called “barrier frustration” when they can see what is going on in a neighbor’s yard (maybe they’re bringing in groceries, having a backyard barbecue, or the kids are simply playing). Barrier frustration occurs when the dog can perceive what’s happening, but can’t join in because the fence or some other obstacle is in the way.

Whatever could be agitating your dog, find ways to lessen it. Use an open fence, like chain link, to let your dog see out. This should help cut down on barrier frustration for your neighbors’ dogs too.

Use Escape-Proof Landscaping Around Your Fence

How tall your fence is another key element of a good dog fence. You should try using various methods of escape-proof landscaping around your fence. If your dog thinks jumping over the fence is possible, he will try. They might also try to dig underneath the fence; hardscaping materials such as gravel or landscaping features like bushes can block gaps between the fence and the ground. Most importantly, don’t put anything your dog could use to climb over the fence, such as a trellis or a storage crate for the garden crate, near the fence itself.

Play with Your Dog

Play with your dog! She will appreciate it, and best of all, it will probably keep her entertained and distracted from whatever else is going on. But if she shows interest in a neighbor’s dog, maybe it’s time for a meet-and-greet for dogs!
