How to Use a Post Hole Digger

Fencing: Post hole diggers work for this as well as mailboxes!

Sometimes when installing a new mailbox or a fence we need to go back to basics. Putting a hole in the ground may not seem like an overwhelming challenge, but you would be surprised. In this blog, we’ll discuss how to use a post hole digger. Post holder diggers resemble shovels but have twin blades instead of only one. They also have thicker shafts to accommodate the double-bladed design. Of course, there are also two handles, one for each blade.

What Gear You Will Need:

You will need the post hole digger itself, sturdy gloves to protect your hands, and steel-toed boots to protect your feet. Some sort of covering for your face and mouth might come in handy as well.

How to Begin:

For starters, face the blades of the post hole digger towards the ground. Slam the blades down and pull out chunks of dirt. Keep going until your hole is sufficiently dug. You will also want to make sure you don’t overexert yourself. Overexertion could lead to injury.

How to Continue:

In order to avoid injuring yourself, here is a useful technique. It is known as “spearchucking”. It’s called spearchucking because it looks like you are throwing a spear. Get a solid grip on the handles before you release them. Slam the digger towards the ground in a smooth, powerful motion. But let go before the digger hits the ground. Once you release the handles, you should be able avoid the shock of impact blowing back from the ground. This impact shockwave will tax your arms and could lead to injury from the strain. The impact will spread out all over your upper body if you are not careful. Once you dig your hole, make sure you have the correct post and fencing, but just in case, the experts are always just a call away!
