A Quick How-To on Reviving Your Fence for Spring

reviving your fence

Paint? Staining? Both can help you in reviving your fence!

At long last, winter is finally on its way out. Although it might still feel freezing outside, spring is on its way. Which leads us to an important question: how is your fence doing? In this blog you’ll find a quick how-to on reviving your fence. Just in time for spring, no less!

Reviving Your Fence is Oh So Easy

  • How Often Should You Repaint?

If you’re wondering, the frequency of fence repainting really depends. What does it depend on? Your local weather patterns. Wet areas call for more painting, while in dryer areas you can hold off on painting and repainting longer. Experts suggest every 2-3 years. Still, you should be sure to inspect your fences for beading. Beading is where water accumulates and forms beads on the surface. If you don’t see beads, it is because the water has penetrated inside your fence. Water soaking in can cause such cosmetic and deeper damages as cracks, chips, and general wear.

  • What Paints or Staining Treatments Should You Use? Painting and staining both protect your fence from the weather. What is the difference? Painting is less expensive, but needs more maintenance. Pre-planning and other such prep work is also a complicated part of the painting or repainting process. On the other hand, staining can be more expensive. You will also need more staining than you would of paint. Stain soaks into wooden fences much more easily than paint, though.

  • What to Do Before Getting Started? Plan to get some help beforehand. Figure out which paint or stain you want to use. Be sure to gather all your tools and equipment for the job. If necessary, outline a budget for the whole venture. Account for drying times, and most importantly of all, stay safe. Do be sure to put gloves on and wear a protective mask for your face if you will sanding or using poisonous chemicals while painting or staining your fence. Reviving your fence is easy, but you shouldn’t put yourself in harm’s way while you’re at it.
