Have You Winterized Your Fence?

Make sure you winterize your fence to prevent damage this cold season.

Winter is fast approaching, and you’re probably already making preparations to pile up firewood and pull out winter garments. But if you haven’t already, now is a good time to start thinking about winterizing your home, and particularly your fence. While predicting winter weather is never certain, it’s always a good idea to make sure your fence is ready for the worst. Here are a few things you can do to winterize your fence.

Winterizing Vinyl Fences

When winterizing a vinyl fence, walk the line of the fence to check for loose rails, panels or posts. Make sure that everything is secured and contact a professional fence contractor if you need help securing it. You should also make sure your fence is clean going into winter. Dirt or mold left on your fence will be harder to remove once it has frozen.

Winterizing Wood Fences

Wood fences are susceptible to quite a bit of damage during the winter months. Check that your fence is properly secured and that there are no leaning parts. Doing repairs ahead of time will ensure that heavy snow doesn’t compromise  your fence. Touch up painted or treated fences before the weather turns, as exposed or damaged wood will be more difficult to repair in spring.

Winterizing Metal Fences

Metal fences are typically the strongest and hold up the best under harsh conditions. Still, with years of wear even the strongest fence will need repairs. Make sure you check your fence of any exposed metal before winter. Areas close to mowers or weed whackers are more susceptible to chipping and will need to be touched up to prevent rusting. If you need to make significant repairs, be sure to contact Hercules Fence today.
