Show Your Fence Some Love This Valentine’s Day — Fence Maintenance Tips

springtime fence maintenance

The warm sun will be shining on your fence before long — how does it look after this winter?

Alright, Punsxutawney Phil saw his shadow last week, so that means spring should be coming soon, right? Right?? While we cross our fingers and hope for some warmer weather to sweep across Virginia Beach, we’re already getting into the springtime mindset. Hopefully the last of the winter fence maintenance blogs have passed, and homeowners and business owners can look forward to sunnier and warmer time spent taking care of commercial and residential fences throughout the area. While it might be too cold to actually go start working on it this weekend, Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to start thinking about springtime fence maintenance.

Getting Your Fence Ready for Spring

Before long you’ll wake up and the birds will be singing, the sun will be shining, and spring will be here. You’ll step out into your yard, take a deep breath of that fresh springtime air, and everything will be right in the world. Until you take a look around and notice that you are in serious need of some fence maintenance. Once it’s warm out, you can actually spend some time giving your fence some TLC in preparation for enjoying your outdoor living space. Here are some steps we recommend for pre-spring fence maintenance.

  1. Take care of any broken or damaged tree limbs that may be posing threats to your fence. Ice and snow can add harmful weight to tree branches, and the last thing you want is for one to come crashing down and destroy your fence! If the limb is too big to remove on your own, call a professional to come take care of the problem so you don’t hurt yourself.
  2. Trim back any shrubs that may have grown close to or in contact with your fence to avoid damage to the fence and to keep the shrubs healthy.
  3. Clean your fence of any grime and debris that may have accumulated throughout the winter. For a wood fence, check out our blog post on cleaning a wooden fence. For other materials like vinyl or ornamental metals, a mild detergent and warm water should do the trick — just make sure to rinse off the soap thoroughly.
  4. Inspect for any structural damage by leaning your weight on each section of the fence. Each board should be totally sturdy — if you notice any give, that could be an indication of rotting, breaking, or foundation weakness. Either way, you’ll want to call a fence contractor (like us!) to come check it out before the problem worsens.
  5. If the cold has started to chip away at your fence’s paint job, early spring is a great time to seal, paint, or stain it to give it a fresh look for the new year.

We promise it’ll be warm enough to carry out your fence maintenance before long. In the meantime, it’s never too early to start planning when it comes to taking care of your fence.
