Mold? On My Fence?

mold, mildew, fences

Wooden fences are the most affected by mold, mildew, and algae, though aluminum, vinyl and steel fences are not immune to them.

The weather is getting wetter and colder, and that means that mold and mildew are beginning to sneak back in! Do not let your front or backyard fence be ruined by mold! Take a moment to read about these tips to help you beat back the moldy menace!

Common Causes of Mold or Mildew

Mildew and mold often grow in dark, damp environments. Wet fences and fences that are frequently in the shade are the most susceptible to mildewing or growing mold. Wooden fences are the most affected by mold, mildew, and algae, though aluminum, vinyl and steel fences are not immune to them.

If your fence is in a place with a lot of moisture or humidity, the excess water vapor can penetrate the surface of the fence and cause mold spores to grow. If a portion of your fence is always in the shade, after rainfall the excess water will not evaporate. Your fence will be wet for a long time, giving mold and mildew a prime space to grow.

What To Do About Mold & Mildew?

Aluminum, vinyl, and steel fences are less susceptible to mold, mildew, and algae because their surfaces are non-porous and are therefore less able to be damaged by water vapor. However, rust and mold can still be an issue with these fences, so remember to take the time to inspect them!

If you’ve discovered that your fence has a mold or mildew problem, there are a few steps you can take to help clean it up. Start by protecting any plants that may be near your fence – tie them up and cover them with heavy-duty plastic. Then, either with a power washer or scrubbing by hand, remove the mold and mildew with a combination of water and bleach. Painting the fence afterwards with a fungicidal paint or sealant will minimize the chances of mold or mildew regrowth.
