Protect Your Fence from Seasonal Weather

Protect your fence from organic debris

Organic debris such as leaves, sticks, and dirt can collect moisture and snow, which can cause a wooden fence to rot and a metal fence to rust.

Fall is right around the corner, and homeowners are getting ready to protect their homes and gardens from seasonal weather. Learn how to protect your fence from seasonal weather with the following tips.

Protect Your Posts

Heavy rains and deep snows can erode the soil around the base of your fence. This can cause the ground to form sinkholes, landslides and shifts that could impact your fence’s posts. Make sure your fence is still level by running a string across the top of the fence posts. Post shifting often means there is any underlying issue, and can lead to costly repairs later on.

Seal Your Fence

Making sure your fence is sealed will help protect your fence by forming a protective layer between the fencing material and the outdoors. This will prevent insects, rust, or water damage from eroding the material. Wooden fences can be pressure treated and sealed before installation to make sure they don’t crack under the pressure of standing up to the outside elements. Metal fences are more resistant, but may need to be resealed occasionally.

Clean It Up

A throughout cleaning can help protect your fence against the woes of seasonal weather Organic debris such as leaves, sticks, and dirt can collect moisture and snow, which can cause a wooden fence to rot and a metal fence to rust. Bushes and shrubs should be trimmed back, and away from the fence. Leaves should be raked away and not left to accumulate near the fence. Pressure washing your fence before the seasonal weather gets started can help deter collections of dirt and leaves, or harmful insects which might contribute to rot and decay. Pressure-washing your fence will also make it look good as new every time you do it!

Inspect Your Fence

Take the time to inspect your fences after every storm to ensure there is no damage. The sooner you spot the damage, the less likely it is to turn into a costly repair down the line.
