Recycling your Old Wooden Fence

When installing your new fence, there is always the question of what you do with your old fence. Read on for some creative solutions!

When installing your new fence, there is always the question of what you do with your old fence. If it happens to be wooden, there are many ways to recycle it. There is always the option of taking it to the landfill but consider transforming it into spring-related or seasonal yard art.

Outdoor Furniture

Between the slats and posts from a fence being recycled provide sturdy material to make durable outdoor furniture. With a few tools and some skills, you can create functional outdoor furniture for friends and family to use in the warm months. Without much talent, there is an opportunity to build benches, picnic tables, children’s tables, and an array of different seating.

Outdoor Planters

Fence Slates can make window boxes and patio planters- the possibilities are endless. There should only be ornamental plants in these repurposed boxes to be safe. If your intention is to plant vegetables or fruit, you should first line the boxes with plastic to prevent the chemicals from the treated wood from leeching into your vegetables or fruit.

Indoor Decor

With minimal skill and artistic talent, used fence poles and slats can be transformed into home decor that is useful and appealing. An old fence slate with a few hooks can be made into a coat or a hat rack. They can also be made into picture frames, shelves, join them together, and placed in front of a fireplace as a piece of art.

Nativity Scenes

An old fence offers a rustic appeal for scenes such as a Nativity. While the less perfect it looks, the more authentic it will look, there is always the option to make miniature scenes and give them as gifts. Maybe someone creative in the neighborhood could help make figurines that would complete the set just in time for the season.

Santa Sleigh

If you’re a bit more skilled and artistic, there is always the option of building Santa’s sleigh. The used wood would create a rustic look but be sturdy enough to be reused year after year.

Seasonal Figurines

You could use a single slat to create a skinny figure for almost any holiday- not just Christmas! Santas, nutcrackers, snowmen, and elves are great ideas for the Christmas holidays, but plenty of slats are left over for other holidays. Easter bunnies, hearts, clovers, American flags, ghosts, witches, and the list goes on. If you’re more artistic with access to tools, there is always the option of making more extensive versions of these decorations.

Your creativity is the only thing between you and repurposing your fence into useable and decorative pieces. Use what’s available online as inspiration. If nothing else, check local swap/sell markets to allow others the opportunity to create with secondhand materials.
