The Differences Between Wrought Iron and Ornamental Iron Fences

The Differences Between Wrought Iron and Ornamental Iron Fences

Here are some of the differences between wrought iron and ornamental iron.

Having the right fence around your yard makes a huge difference. Even if you are satisfied with the fence you have now, that doesn’t mean you can’t upgrade it in the near future. Have you considered replacing your wood or vinyl fence? As durable as they are, maybe they finally broke down. That’s why you could choose an iron fence instead. Here are some of the differences between wrought iron and ornamental iron

Different Materials

Wrought iron fences are made from, well, iron. Raw iron is combined with iron silicate. Ornamental iron fences, on the other hand, are actually made from steel. Steel is a combination of carbon and iron. Thus, ornamental iron is lighter, more affordable, and much easier to work with than its counterpart. Even so, it can still mimic true wrought iron.

Spotting the Difference

Now let’s talk about how to spot some of the differences between the two types of fence. You’ll notice that wrought iron looks more elaborate and professionally-made than its cousin. Most of the time, a wrought iron fence is custom-made for whoever wanted it. Decorative fences are mass-produced so they basically all look the same. Welded seams also indicate the presence of steel tubing.

Choosing Wrought Iron

If you are looking for high-quality fabrication or need something for fancier architecture, then wrought iron fencing is what you should choose. Wrought iron is more historically accurate, but it can also be used to turn a fence into a work of art.

Choosing Ornamental Iron

If you need lots of iron fencing or you need a quick turnaround, then ornamental iron should be the material that you choose. They are mass-produced and thus easier to find and ship. As with wrought iron, ornamental iron (which is actually steel) can provide a modicum of security that you didn’t have before. Plus, these fences can pivot, which makes them a great choice for sloped or uneven ground. And even if you are on a budget, you can still get a fantastic looking custom fence suitable for your needs.
