Fencing 101: What You Need To Understand About Fence Cleaning

Installing a fence on your property is a wise investment. But no matter what material you choose, you must do some maintenance. Some materials, like metal fences, require more vigorous work of scrubbing and priming, and repainting over the years. Others do not. Overall, all fence materials do require fence cleaning. Here is an excellent primer on fence cleaning by fencing material type to help you.

Tips for Cleaning Your Wooden Fence

Cleaning your fence is essential.

Wood Fencing

Wood is easily still one of the top (if not the top) fencing materials because it is readily available, tends to be cheaper than other materials, and provides a classic look for a fence. When most people picture a fence, they picture wood, from solid panels to pickets. Wood does require maintenance, however. It can succumb to rot and insect damage and be plagued by mold and mildew. In most cases, a soiled wood fence will need to be scrubbed.

If you have mold and mildew, you can use a spray-foam cleaner that sits on the surface, but you should still clean the fence to dislodge the grime. If you don’t want to buy cleaner, you can combine baking soda and vinegar and then scrub the fence. Once the fence is clean and dry, stain or paint it to protect it.

Vinyl Fencing

Vinyl is, hands down, one of the most accessible fencing materials to maintain. You can remove dirt by simply spraying it off with a hose. You don’t even need a pressure washer; just a garden hose and spray attachment will often do the trick. For stuff that won’t rinse away, use a Magic EraserIfat; both don’t do the trick, and you can wash the fence with a solution of 5 parts water to 1 part bleach. That’s the most you should ever need to do.

Metal Fencing

While metal won’t rot or succumb to insects, it can rust, which can be a pain to clean off. You can clean dirty metal fences can be cleaned with soap and water, but rust must be scrapped, scrubbed, and sanded. Once the rust is removed, add a rust-preventing primer and then paint. Repainting your metal fence every few years to prevent significant rust damage.
