Protecting Your Fence from Wind and Storm Damage

Take extra precautions to protect your fence and home from storm damage.

It’s hurricane season, and with hurricane Hermine already making its way up the coast, now is probably a good time to start thinking about how you can protect your fence from dangerous weather conditions. It’s imperative that you take extra precautions to make sure your property suffers as little damage as possible. Here are a few tips to protect your fence.

Trim Trees Near the Fence

Most storm fence damage comes from tree limbs that have fallen on the fence and crushed one or more sections. You can easily prevent this from happening by removing overhanging limbs. If the tree in question happens to be on your neighbor’s property, ask if they can have the overhanging limbs removed. It’s also a good idea to inspect your trees to make sure they aren’t dead or dying–as a heavy storm will uproot them.

Get Rid of Potential Projectiles

A stiff wind can turn just about anything in your yard into a bullet that could severely damage your fence, your cards, and your home. Always secure away patio furniture, trash containers, grills, flowerpots, and hanging chimes/lights before a storm.

Repair Loose Posts and Sections

If a storm’s coming, then it’s time to stop procrastinating on fence repairs. Loose or damaged fence posts are incredibly susceptible to high winds. Remove and rebury any posts that have already started to life out of the ground due to prior storm damage. Repair loose boards on both wood and vinyl fences as they can turn into a ballistic hazard during a storm.

Secure Your Gates

Lock your gates with a padlock or chain. High winds can cause a gate door to slam against your fence or the side of your house, causing considerable damage. Some gates that are easily removed from their hinges can be taken off and stored in the garage until the storm has passed.
