Getting Your Fence Ready for Fall and Winter

fall

Rake leaves away from your fence so that they don’t trap moisture and cause rot.

With summer fast approaching the end and fall closing in, now is the time to start making your fall and winter yard preparations. If you’re a fence owner, it’s necessary to ensure that your fence is in good condition to survive the changing seasons. Here are a few things you’ll want to put on your checklist.

Inspect Your Fence for Signs of Damage

If you have a wooden fence, summer rainfall may cause it to show signs of damage, and it’s something you’ll want to address before the weather goes cold and dark. Signs of rot may include boards that are caving in, loose and wobbly posts, and gates that sag or won’t close properly. A dilapidated fence might look spooky and cool for Halloween, but you’ll need to make sure it’s ready for the threat of snow.

Protect Your Fence from Moisture

Even if your fence isn’t showing signs of rot, you’ll want to make sure that it has been waterproofed and will not be at risk in the future. You can perform a “splash test” on wood fences to determine if they are waterproofed. If the water beads up, your fence is good to go. If, however, the wood darkens and absorbs the water, you will need to apply a new layer of sealant or waterproof stain. Don’t skimp out.

Remove Leaves and Snow

Raking leaves is one of the pains of fall yardwork, but it’s an important part of protecting your fence. Leaves collect moisture, which can cause trouble for your fence if it’s made of wood. Even vinyl fences that get wet can grow algae. Make sure to rake leaves away from your fence so they don’t get wedged between fence boards. Snow piling up on your leaves will make this problem even worse, so it’s a good idea to shovel as much snow off your fence as you can. Taking these measures will ensure that your fence lasts for many seasons to come, and that you’ll be getting the maximum value out of it.
