Tips for Preventing and Removing Mold Growth on your Wood Fence

A wood fence is particularly susceptible to mold or mildew growth.

Wood fences are an excellent option for any backyard looking to increase privacy while not breaking the bank. However, keeping your fence looking as good as new requires a little TLC from time to time. A wood fence is particularly susceptible to mold or mildew growth. While any fungus growth looks unsightly, it’s not as challenging to handle as you may think! Here are some tips for cleaning mold off of your fence and preventing it from coming back.

Removing Mold Growth on Your Wood Fence

If you’ve noticed green patches already growing on your wood fence, not to worry! Here are a few ways to remove it:

  1. You can use warm water and a bleach solution to scrub the mold off of the fence. When using bleach, make sure to cover your plants to keep them safe. There are also products specifically made to remove mold and mildew you can use; make sure to read the instructions and take any precautions. After either of these, you should rinse your fence off with clean water and let your fence dry out completely.
  2. You can remove any mold or mildew growth with a pressure washer. Ensure the proper PSI for the type of wood you have. Using too much pressure could damage the wood. If you’re unsure, we recommend calling a professional.
  3. If the growth is substantial or there’s a lot of damage to your wood fence, you may need to have boards, or the entire fence replaced. In that case, please reach out to us to get a quote

Preventing Mold Growth on Your Wood Fence

So, now that your wood fence is entirely free of mold or mildew, it’s time to take precautions so it doesn’t come back. The best way to prevent growth on your fence is to use pressure-treated lumber to build it. The pressure treatment infuses the wood with chemicals specifically designed to repel water and mold growth! Another great way to stop fungal growth is to sand and stain it. Various types of stains repel water and block UV rays to prevent fading. If the look of stain doesn’t match your home’s design, then you can also sand, prime, and paint it. There are similar options for mildew and mold-resistant primers and paints that can help your fence look good for years to come!
