A fence is a valuable addition to your property. Chain-link fences offer various benefits, from securing your stuff to safeguarding your family and pets. Depending on the fence, they may provide privacy and seclusion in an otherwise open yard. Generally speaking, fence installation is a job best left to the professionals. If you are bound and determined to DIY the task, you must ensure you’re doing it right. Read on for pointers on how to install chain link fence rolls correctly.

Chain link fences offer significant benefits.

Start With The Legal Stuff

Before you choose to install a fence, make sure you’re covering all of the legal aspects. The odds are good that your area requires some permitting or inspection when installing a fence, and there may be regulations on where you can place it (how close to the property line it can be, or if it can block line-of-sight on a corner, for instance). If you live in a home covered by an HOA, there may also be additional rules that aren’t legal requirements but that you still have to follow. Make sure You have all of this stuff in line before you start.

Prepare The Site

Most of the work of installing the fence is done before you install the fence. You have to clear the area of debris and hazards, make sure that you’ve planned for any changes in the terrain along the line of the fence, and let your neighbors know that you’re going to be doing this project (it’s the neighborly thing to do). Next, you’ve got to set all of the posts. Digging post holes is a big job.

They have to meet the minimum depth for a sturdy fence (at least 1/3 of the length of the pole, plus 4 inches for gravel) and are at least three times wider than your post. Place the gravel and then the post, then fill the hole with concrete to make a mound around the post. Make sure the post is level on all sides, and then let the concrete set for at least 2-3 days.

Chain-Link Materials (Bands, Rails, Caps)

Tension bands must be installed first since those maintain the fence’s tension. Once they’re in, you can install caps and rails.

Stretch And Tighten your Chain-Link

Finally, you’re ready to unroll, stretch, and tighten the mesh. The tension bars get woven through the ends of the mesh and then pull everything taught. If you have extra, remove it once the fencing is taught and secured.
